Ayurvedic Treatment for Sciatica

SCIATICA

With lifestyle changes, back pain is very common nowadays. Low back pain affects men a little more than women and is more frequent in the working population.

The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the back of the pelvis to the feet. Sciatica refers to the pain that comes from this nerve. A severe pain that radiates from the back into the hip and outer side of the leg is caused by compression of the sciatic nerve. Typically sciatica affects only one side of your body. In Ayurveda sciatica is called Gridrasi. Ayurveda categorized Gridhrasi as one of the diseases caused by vitiation of Vata. Sometimes even Kapha vitiation along with Vata also causes Gridhrasi. It is considered one of the Vata vyadhi.

Causes of Sciatica:

  • Accidents
  • Bad posture
  • Aggravation of Vata dosha
  • Improper digestion
  • Narrowing of spinal cord
  • Tumours in the spine
  • Injury to the spine
  • Gynaecological causes including pregnancy

As with most other Vata disorders, cold and wet weather often worsens the pain.

Symptoms of Sciatica:

Stiffness, pain and pricking sensation initially at the hip and gradually radiating towards the waist, back, thigh, knee and calf region, difficulty in walking, and loss of energy.
