Ayurvedic Treatment for Psoriasis

Psoriasis:

  • Psoriasis is a non-contagious common skin condition that causes rapid skin cell reproduction resulting in red, itchy scalp, dry patches of thickened skin.
  • It can have substantial psychological and social impact on patient’s life. The chronic and recurring nature of the disease hampers the quality of life to a great extent.
  • It occurs more likely in dry skin than oily or well-moisturized skin. Excessive alcohol consumption, obesity, lack of or overexposure to sunlight, stress, cold climate, physical illness, superficial wounds, and in general poor health results in flaring up of psoriasis.
  • Ayurveda believes that impurities in the blood related to emotional aspects are the cause of the disease. Psoriasis is believed to occur due to vitiation in all three doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) in varying degree, but mainly involvement of Vata and Kapha dosha is noticed.
  • The predominance of vata causes pain, dryness and scaling of skin. Pitta vitiation leads to burning sensation, redness, inflammation etc and that of kapha causes rashes, itching, discharge, thickening of skin etc. From these signs and symptoms, the doshic involvement is analysed carefully in each patient, which is of utmost importance in the management of this disease.
  • At Travancore Ayurveda, our treatment primarily focuses on blood purification and balancing the vitiated Doshas. Management of Psoriasis comprises of Shodhana chikitsha done through Panchakarma therapies, Shamana chikitsha through administration of internal medication and external applications, Rasayana chikitsha, Diet and lifestyle changes.
