Overweight and obesity are diagnosed according to the Body Mass Index (BMI) of a person. BMI is calculated by dividing the Body weight in Kg by the square of body height in meters. Normal BMI ranges between 18.5 to 25. A BMI greater than 25 and up to 30 is considered Overweight, while a BMI greater than 30 is considered Obesity.
Obesity can lead to many other diseases like Diabetes, Hypertension, High cholesterol, Heart disease, Infertility, Arthritis, Sleep apnea, etc. Obesity should be treated and cured in its early stages itself.
In Ayurveda, Obesity is known as Sthoulya, a condition where excess Kapha dosha, along with weakened Agni, leads to abnormal accumulation of meda dhatu (fat tissue). This imbalance slows metabolism, creates ama (toxins), and blocks the natural movement of Vata, resulting in continuous weight gain and difficulty in losing fat.
