Bell’s Palsy (Ardita vata ) Management through Ayurveda.

Facial muscle functions play an integral part in our day today life. Face is the index of mind. Facial expressions reveal the mood of a person (smile, sorrow etc.).

Facial paralysis is defined as an inability to move the muscles of the face, on one or both sides. Annual incidence is 15-30 cases per 100,000 population. It affects both men and women, with more chances in the age group of 10 to 40 years.

In Ayurveda, ardita vata is mentioned one among the vataja nanatmaja vikara.

Let us see to whom ardita vata can affect,

  • Pregnant women
  • Women during post delivery period
  • Weak and emaciated people
  • Excessive yawning, loud laughing
  • Eating hard food stuff
  • Carrying heavy loads on head
  • Infection of middle ear
  • Herpes zoster and Viral infection

Pathogenesis – Due to nidana sevana, vata gets aggravated and take sthana in the mukha ardha bhaga leading to vikrti of mukha known as Ardita vata.

Predominal symptoms of ardita vata

  • Feeling of horripilation
  • Generalised or localised tremors
  • Excessive lacrimation or turbidity of eyes
  • Numbness and pricking pain at the site
  • Stiffness in the sides of neck and lower jaw

Signs and symptoms

Ardita Vata

  • Facial Weakness
  • Impairment of taste
  • Muscle twitching
  • Ringing in one or both ears
  • Difficulty in speech
  • Pain and discomfort in jaw and behind the ears
  • Tremors in head

Treatment

We have a set of treatments like,

  • Nasyam, Nadi sweda (Ksheera dhooma), Upanaha sweda (Kukkutanda sweda), Sirobasti, Karna poorana, Akshitarpana
  • Some of the single drugs useful are Lashuna, Nirgundi, Eranda, Panasa patra, Ashwagandha, Vacha, Guggulu, Rasna etc
